Balayage vs highlights: which one is right for your hair?
"I want to brighten my hair… but I don't know whether to ask for balayage or highlights." It's the number-one question in our color chair. Both techniques lighten hair, but the result, upkeep and price are different. Here's the clear breakdown so you arrive at your appointment knowing exactly what to ask for.
What are highlights (traditional foils)?
Highlights are done with foils, lifting strands from root to tip. The result is a uniform, defined, more intense brightening with visible contrast from the root.
They're ideal if you want a noticeable change, a fuller blonde, or gray coverage with dimension. At our salon: partial $200, full $260.
What is balayage?
Balayage comes from the French word for "sweeping": color is hand-painted onto the hair's surface, concentrating light on mids and ends. The result is a natural, sun-kissed gradient with no harsh grow-out line.
It's the favorite of anyone who wants to look brightened without being a slave to touch-ups. Our custom balayage is $400 and includes toning.
The 4 differences that matter
- Effect: highlights = defined contrast from the root · balayage = soft, natural gradient
- Maintenance: highlights need touch-ups every 6-8 weeks · balayage goes 3-4 months without looking neglected
- Salon time: highlights 2-3 hours · balayage 2.5-4 hours
- Investment: highlights from $200 · balayage $400 (but with fewer visits per year, the annual cost evens out)
Which one for your case?
Choose highlights if: you want statement blonde, you love contrast, you have grays to blend, or you enjoy frequent salon visits.
Choose balayage if: you want a low-maintenance change, it's your first time lightening, you want to grow out your natural color without a hard line, or your schedule doesn't allow monthly touch-ups.
