What is a keratin treatment and who is it for?

The keratin treatment is one of the most requested services at our Arlington salon — and one that raises the most questions. Does it really smooth? Does it damage hair? How long does it last? This guide answers everything, with the honesty of a team that has worked with every hair type for over 20 years.

What exactly is keratin?

Keratin is the natural protein your hair is made of. Heat, sun, chemicals and time make hair lose it — bringing frizz, dullness and unmanageability.

A keratin treatment replenishes that protein and seals it into the cuticle with heat. The result: smooth, silky, shiny, frizz-free hair, even through Virginia's summer humidity. It's not an aggressive permanent straightening: it's a treatment that smooths while it nourishes.

How the process works at the salon

At Heads Up Hair Design the full process takes 2 to 3 hours depending on your hair's length and density:

Aftercare

The first 3 days define the result. The golden rules:

How long does it last and what does it cost?

With proper care, results last 3 to 5 months. At our salon the keratin treatment costs $150 — published price, no surprises. If your hair needs deep repair besides smoothing, Hair Botox ($200) may be the better option; we evaluate it at your consultation.

Beware of deals that are too cheap: a poorly applied keratin or one with questionable products can seriously damage your hair.

Who is it for — and who isn't it for?

Keratin is ideal if you battle constant frizz, humidity-puffed hair, or spend 20+ minutes a day flat-ironing. It works on natural, colored and highlighted hair.

We don't recommend it if your hair is extremely weakened by recent bleaching — it needs repair first. That's why we always evaluate your hair before booking: if it's not the right time, we'll tell you.
